Workshop Information

Who should come?

If you are hoping to minimise the need for intervention in your birth, then this workshop is for you.  It will give you more in-depth information than many mainstream classes will on coping techniques and decision-making strategies.

Workshops are aimed at couples.  Many couples report that the partner gains most from attending the workshop (although Mums usually say good things too - see the testimonials page!).  Others say that the workshop has brought them together over the forthcoming birth.

What should we bring?

I recommend that you wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move around easily.  I do ask participants to adopt positions to illustrate birthing poses, for example, so skirts may not be comfortable.

If it helps you may want to bring a pen and paper.

What do you cover?

In an informal and friendly atmosphere, we cover:

  • How a normal birth progresses
  • All the things that are within your power to influence
  • Birth-place options
  • How to make decisions that are best for you
  • Natural coping methods
  • Environmental factors that influence your birth
  • Relaxation and breathing techniques
  • Some interventions and how to avoid the need for them

How are you different from other antenatal classes

The Birthing with Confidence workshops are different from mainstream classes in many ways.

We devote a full day to natural labour, whereas you may spend around 2 hours on this topic in mainstream classes.

The emphasis is on minimising the need for intervention and medical pain relief.

We focus only on labour, and go into it in far greater depth.  We don't cover pregnancy or the time after birth.

The workshop is over a full day, rather than 5-8 (depending on the provider) weekly evening classes of 2 hours' duration.
